How We Do Sushi In My Family

This is how sushi is done in my family.  There's nothing dainty or aesthetic about it.  It's all about maximum efficiency and self-service.

First, my mom will buy sushi-grade fish and clean, slice, and plate it on a pretty platter.

At each place setting, we get a bowl of sushi rice (short grain rice, a little sugar, salt, and white vinegar).

We also each get a nice hot bowl of odeng gook, a soup with fish cakes.  This is to help wash down the food.

We also each get our own condiment dish with cho ganjang (soy sauce with a little bit of vinegar) with a squirt of wasabi.

But the most fun part of Sushi Night is making them ourselves!  To aid in the process, we each get a plastic glove (those kinds that sandwich makers might wear while building your sub).

You grab a little ball of rice out of your own bowl...

Then you put a piece of tuna (or whatever fish you're having) into the soy sauce mixture, then plop it right on your rice ball.

Do you see why I get homesick?  Oh mommy.

Oh, and didn't my brother do such a great job modeling sushi here?  Did i mention today is his birthday?  Happy birthday, baby brother!  I can't believe the little runt is 19!

 Love ya!
